Sources and method

Every item, class heading and basic number comes from WIPO's official English Nice Classification master files.

Edition and source files

NCL(13-2026), 13th edition, version 2026, in force since 1 January 2026. This is the version in force when the data was retrieved; advance versions are not used.

The English classification texts supply the primary indications, synonyms and class headings. The top structure supplies class numbers and item identifiers. The program joins these by WIPO idRef and id, and combines the two-digit class with the four-digit item number to display the six-digit basic number.

Selection measure and page limit

Items are ranked by the character count of the complete primary English indication, including spaces, punctuation and qualifiers. Ties use the case-insensitive term, then the six-digit basic number. Short wording is a proxy for common terms, not a measure of search volume or demand. Synonyms stay on the same item page.

One page represents one WIPO basic-number item, with its primary indication and any official synonyms. The shortest terms are retained until the complete site fits 3,000 HTML pages, including home, class indexes, this guide, about and 404. The home page reports the generated item count. The complete alphabetical list is available from WIPO.

How to use the answer

The answer applies to the complete term shown, including any qualifying words. The class heading is reproduced as a general reference for the class. A basic number identifies an entry in the alphabetical list; it is not an application or registration number.

Reference information, not legal advice. A national office decides acceptance and protection under its law. In Madrid applications, WIPO may determine classification.
